AIP fosters awareness on post- harvest management techniques of vegetables

AIP conducted an awareness and training program on production and post- harvest management of winter vegetables at Assam Agricultural University (AAU) in collaboration with KVK, Barpeta. The day-long program held on 5 November, 2013 witnessed the active participation of several trainees and distinguished faculty members.

The awareness cum training program was formally inaugurated by Dr. M. Neog, Associate Director of Extension Education, AAU, Jorhat who highlighted the present status of agriculture in our country with special reference to pre and post –production scenario of vegetables. He also expressed concern over the post-production loss of winter vegetables in huge quantity and urged all the participants to adopt proper post– harvest management technology. Dr. Sarma, Program Coordinator, KVK, Barpeta, discussed about micro-nutrient management in vegetable crops and spoke at length on “ Sanitation and Phyto-Sanitation (SPS) measures in vegetable processing”.

The lectures were followed by brain storming sessions that evoked various views and perspectives of participants on post- management harvesting techniques. The lecture on plant protection technique in vegetable crops covered by Mr. G. K. Upamanya, SMS (Plant Protection) was very insightful . Earlier in the day, several private partners like Anchalik Gram Unnayan Parishad, CASA-NGO took part in the program.

The program helped the participants realize the need and importance of post-harvest operations in winter vegetables to avoid distress sale and reduce post-harvest loss.  The training program successfully concluded with a positive feedback from the faculty members and trainees.
