Farmers/Extension agents
The Agricultural Innovation Partnership (AIP) in its attempt to improve the income and livelihood of farmers and small-scale entrepreneurs as well as to enhance the low yield of seasonal crops in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, organized extension activities across the state in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and Tata Chemicals Limited (TCL) under AIP’s Technology Dissemination and Income Improvement Activities (TDIIA).
 
Objectives of TDIIA

The objectives of TDIIA are in line with the overall objectives of AIP

  • Developing improved package of practices and facilitating adoption of low cost meaningful technologies in popular food crops to achieve higher productivity and improved food quality, and thereby ensuring higher economic returns to the farmer
  • Creating opportunities for diversified income to the farmer through innovative value added product development and subsequent training
  • Training small food processors on process automation, hygiene and sanitation, ingredients and additive usage as per FSS Act, etc. for enhancing efficiency, product quality and income.

Key Activities of TDIIA

  • Undertaking research to develop new package of practices (POPs) through research trials, data collection, recording, analysis, research publication, etc.
  • Developing innovative value added food products to diversify farm produce usage and thereby stabilizing market prices
  • Organizing farmer training programs for technology adoption, new POPs, market linkages, etc.
  • Training small food processors on technology adoption, hygienic practices, FSS Act requirements, value added products, etc.

Program Participants

These are focused programs targeted at farmers and small food processors or entrepreneurs in predefined thematic areas.

Collaborator’s Role

  • State Agriculture Universities: Faculty from SAUs will contribute towards arranging training materials, training farmers/food producers, conducting research trials & data analysis, involving students in project work to bring out research publications, developing new POPs and their implementation.
  • Corporate Partners: Agribusiness and Food processing companies will be involved in training farmers/ food producers in technology adoption, as well as in research work related to developing new POPs/value-added products and subsequent extension efforts.
  • US Universities: US university faculty members will engage in training of trainers and in research work on developing new POPs/value-added products/etc.
  • Research Institutions: These institutions will contribute towards introducing low-cost technological solutions to field-level problems and technology dissemination.

Student involvement
Short-term project work

  • Eight third year graduate students from partnering universities would be given the opportunity to engage in a short-term project work during TDIIA programs for each crop.

Developing and implementing new POPs

  • The university faculty and students will engage in developing improved POP targeting specific crop and implementing these through a specific set of farmers
  • A team of students and faculty with two students each from the departments of Agronomy, Soil Science, and Genetics will be involved for a period of one year in focused project activities during TDIIAs. This team will develop the entire package of practices for the whole season for their focus crop, and will also bring out a research publication as an outcome of the engagement.
  • While the existing POP will be adopted for the selected crop initially, over a period of one year research work will be carried out involving university faculty, farmers, private institution (such as TCL for wheat and John Deere for rice), university students for new POP. This will involve on-farm trials in university plots, data collection and analysis, etc.

TDIIA in Uttar Pradesh

For farmer-related activities in the western Uttar Pradesh region in 2012, TDIIA has focused on Sugarcane and Kharif Maize & Okra, which were planned in consultation with TCL and SVPUAT. Sugarcane focused TDIIA were planned in five districts of western UP namely Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Bagpat, and Rampur; and the execution was planned to be in a phased manner aiming to mobilize five hundred sugarcane farmers. Among the three phases planned for Sugarcane, the first phase was successfully completed in May 2012; the second and third phases have been slated to be executed in August and October.

Apart from this, Kharif Maize & Okra focused TDIIA have been slated to kick start in August in western UP in four districts namely Bulandsheher, Muradabad, Panchsheel Nagar, and Rampur. These activities aim at mobilizing 400 farmers in each of the two phases planned for Kharif Maize & Okra.

Similar TDIIA have also been planned for the eastern Uttar Pradesh region in consultation with Banaras Hindu University and Tata Chemicals Limited, with focus on crops like Pigeon Pea, Summer Maize, and Mango. Activities related to all of these crops would be conducted in two phases in different districts – Pigeon Pea in four districts, Summer Maize in two and Mango in two districts. Some of these activities would start in August.
